Dealing with Trade Unions

In terms of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995 (LRA) an employee has the freedom of choice to join a Trade Union. Once a Trade Union acquires sufficient or majority representation of the employees in the workplace, they (the Trade Union) may then approach an employer to seek recognition for either deduction of Trade Union membership fees and/or recognition to represent their members in, for example, wage negotiations and conditions of employment. Trade Union officials are usually skillful persons able to represent their members. Employers who are not versed in dealing with Trade Unions are well advised to take up membership with an organization like HASEA where they may be assisted and in so doing, level the playing field when dealing with Trade Unions.
